Call-The-Police

CALL THE POLICE – THEY DON’T HAVE TIME TO READ YOUR MINDS

Program these numbers into all your phones for one-stroke quick dialing:

911 when something is happening or threatening to happen now and needs immediate attention – injury accident, fire, the coyote has my dog, they are trying to open my door.

714 754-5252 Non-emergencies – when the solicitor just walked from your door, the suspicious person is moving slowly, we just saw a coyote go down the street in front of our house.

Use online reporting and save PD man-hours if you have a personal email and there is no suspect information. Go to www.costamesapd.org , click “Online Reporting” and see what reports you can file that are not time-sensitive.

You don’t have to leave your name, if you are afraid of something that is going on – drug or other threatening activity, you need to
call the police or it will never get better and it might get worse.

Call the PD in a TIMELY MANNER – NOW instead of hours or days or weeks after you find out there is a problem.

If you can only think of 911 and not the longer number, use 911 – It is important to leave 911 lines open for emergencies, but you will not be scolded. Just do something to help the PD help you.

WORK WITH POLICE TO KEEP COYOTES OUT OF OUR NEIGHBORHOODS
Following these rules is the key to success

Animal control officers have shifted their work schedules to be on duty in the early morning when the coyotes are more likely to be out and about. The police patrols are also looking as they go about their work.

The following rules are key to keeping our neighborhoods and all their residents safe. They must be followed by ALL neighbors to effectively protect the neighborhood.

DO NOT LEAVE ANY FOOD OR WATER OUTSIDE YOUR HOMES.

•   ONLY LEAVE AN UNSUPERVISED PET OUTSIDE IF THEY ARE SECURED IN A KENNEL WITH A COVERED TOP, SCREENED SIDES AND SOLID FLOOR. REMEMBER COYOTES CAN DIG 18 INCHES DEEP.

DO NOT LET SMALL CHILDREN PLAY OUTSIDE WITHOUT AN ADULT WITHIN REACH.

KEEP ALL TRASH CANS TIGHTLY COVERED.

TRIM UP YOUR BUSHES. It discourages coyotes and also prevents humans from hiding. CLEAR ABOUT 18 - 24 INCHES BETWEEN THE GROUND AND THE BRANCHES. You can then see someone’s shoes if you search with a flashlight.

BOTHER COYOTES WALKING ON YOUR PROPERTY WITH LIGHTS, NOISE (like a soup can holding a few cans or rocks), STREAMS OF WATER, PEPPER SPRAY OR THROWING STONES.

DO NOT LEAVE DOGS ALONE IN BACKYARD WHEN YOU ARE GONE. Coyotes can jump fences and walls.
If you see a coyote, let the police know as suggested above. Coyotes come and go over the years. If you follow the rules above, whether or not you have seen a coyote, you are less likely to have coyotes visit.

VEHICLE BURGLARIES – MOSTLY PREVENTABLE

LEAVE NOTHING
in your car, not even wires showing, and LOCK YOUR DOORS. You are much less likely to have to replace broken car windows from an attempted theft. Park cars in garage or driveway if you can.

YOU HAVE CONTROL OVER DOOR-TO-DOOR SOLICITORS

You are in control. You don’t have to open the door. Never let them in.

Be sure they know you are there, so they don’t think the house is empty – you can just call out and tell them to leave.

If you can get a description from looking through a window or the screen door, as soon as the solicitor leaves, give the description and direction of the solicitor to the PD according to the suggested numbers above.

Solicitors would like some of your money, but don’t count on getting anything in return.

They want you to trust them because they live nearby, are your neighbor, have a good cause, want to shake your hand, need a drink of water.

Don’t worry if they have the right permits or licenses, because they usually don’t. Let the police talk to them and figure that out.

If no one lets them in or gives them money, and the police find them and give them a ticket which costs them money, they will go somewhere else.

HOW TO DESCRIBE A SUSPECT TO THE POLICE
(Natl. Terror Alert Response Ctr.)

S – Size – How many, gender, age and physical description

A – Activity – Exactly what are they doing L – Location – Exact Location

U – Uniform – What are they wearing, including shoes T – Time – Date, Time and Duration of activity

E – Equipment – Vehicle make, color, license plate, camera, gun or other things carried

YOU ARE SAFER IF YOU KNOW YOUR NEIGHBORS

Then it is easier to recognize who is a stranger in the neighborhood, or when behavior you see is suspicious.

Call the police at the appropriate number above day or night and let them talk to the person and be sure everything is OK.
